AIA Lunch & Learn: Polymer Modified Bitumen Membranes (PMBM)
Thursday January 4th, 3:00 PM EST

Presented by: David G Allen, Bitec, Inc.

AIA CE Credit: 1 hour. Presentation and Q&A to last 1 hour.

In this presentation, we will delve into the realm of polymer-modified bitumen membranes (PMBMs), exploring their intricate composition, the meticulous process of selection, tracing their historical evolution, and shedding light on their continuous development in the construction industry. PMBMs, often considered the backbone of modern waterproofing solutions, are engineered by incorporating polymers into traditional bitumen, imparting enhanced durability, flexibility, and resistance to environmental factors. The composition of these membranes is a delicate balance between bitumen and various polymers such as SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) or APP (Atactic Polypropylene), each contributing distinct properties to the final product

The journey of PMBMs is deeply rooted in history, dating back to their inception in the mid-20th century. Over the years, these membranes have undergone significant refinement, aligning with advancements in materials science and construction technology. We will explore moments in their development, from their early days to innovations that have brought them to the forefront of contemporary waterproofing solutions. Furthermore, our discussion will extend beyond the technical aspects, as we assess the ecological impacts of PMBMs. We will evaluate their sustainability, considering factors such as recyclability, the overall environmental footprint, and their role in both construction and environmental stewardship.
