Energy efficiency has become a topic of discussion in Washington DC with the President and Secretary of Energy, specifically referring to buildings and roofing as key components of their overall plan to develop an energy-secure future. Mr. Desjarlais will review new energy standards for roofing and what people in the roofing industry need to pay attention to if they want their businesses to thrive in the future.

Andre Desjarlais is a Program Manager for Building Envelopes Program (BEP), Engineering and Transportation Science Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy. Prior to joining the Buildings Technology Center in 1991, he was the manager of the Thermophysics Laboratory at Holometrix, Inc., where he conducted research on the thermophysical properties of materials and systems with an emphasis on reflective insulation systems and fenestration products.

His areas of responsibility include; research in-situ testing protocols, the development of standardized means of determining the long-term thermal performance of closed cell plastic foams, and the impacts of moisture in low-slope roof systems.

Research in the Building Envelopes Program (BEP) focuses on improving not only the systems that make up the roofs, walls and foundations of buildings, but also the insulating materials that these systems contain.  We are interested in the ways that heat, air, and moisture travel through the building envelope and the effects that various building materials have on energy consumption.  The goal of this research is to identify energy-efficient building materials and envelope systems that will be adopted by the U.S. building industry.
